A Marie Grows in Brooklyn: Someone by Alice McDermott

Someone Alice McDermott’s fine and finely-focused novel is the first of the seven books I read in 2014 that I absolutely, positively loved. The main character in Someone is Marie, an Irish-American in 20th-century Brooklyn. Her story is told in an episodic, nonlinear style that illuminates McDermott’s spare prose. It is a literary marvel.
